Share your Censorship Story at the Stand for the Banned Recording Booth

C

elebrities, librarians, and readers
have read passages from banned
books at the past five ALA Annual
Conferences in support of the freedom to
read. This year, SAGE Publishing and ALA's
Office for Intellectual Freedom are shaking
up the literary tradition.
Instead of reading from challenged books,
participants will be asked to share their stories of censorship or favorite banned book
memories on camera. Under the title "Stand
for the Banned," these videos will be published on the Banned Books Week YouTube
channel and promoted during Banned Books
Week 2017 (September 24 - 30).
SAGE Publishing and OIF decided to
incorporate questions into this year's filming
to bring a new focus to censorship issues.
"What makes censorship so interesting
isn't just the attempt to silence others," said
OIF Director James LaRue. "What's interesting is why people find some ideas so alarming. Often there is real meaning behind the
fear, but it takes a certain kind of fearlessness
to find it."
SAGE Publishing is also a strong supporter of the right to seek and express ideas.
"The free expression of ideas is essential to
our understanding of the world," said Clive

Parry, Global Vice President of Marketing
and Public Affairs at SAGE. "We are delighted to again partner with ALA to provide
a platform where individuals can advocate
for their right to read and the freedom to exchange ideas. All are welcome to participate."
A collaboration with the Global Literature in Libraries Initiative (GLLI) brings
a translation perspective to the recording
booth; Stand for the Banned will offer a
shelf of internationally banned books for
readers to peruse, along with banned classics, graphic novels and children's books.

Rachel Hildebrandt, a contributor of
GLLI, said that too often, readers assume
publishing challenges only exists in their
own cultural context.
"By including international works in
the recording booth, visitors will have an
opportunity to widen their awareness of the
true scope of global censorship and of the
way in which translation can help authors
continue their creative engagement, despite
the legal hurdles set up by the authorities
who seek to diminish and deny their voices,"
said Hildebrandt.

Participants are invited to pose in front of
the Banned Books Week social media banner
while they wait to speak on camera. Each
reader will also receive an "I Stand for the
Banned" ribbon to proudly display during
Conference.
Join OIF, SAGE Publishing, and GLLI in
celebrating literary liberties. The recording
booth will be open on the Saturday and Sunday of Conference, from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00
p.m. It will be located outside the exhibit hall
and close to the registration tables. Look for
the red carpet and lights!

Banned Abroad: Stories of International Censorship

W

hen a worn, string-bound manuscript found its way to a New York-based publisher, the book became more than an eyeopening tale about dictatorship. Its contents were forbidden and secret - until now.
The Accusation is believed to be the first manuscript by a living dissident writer that had been smuggled out of North Korea.
The story of its publication - which features activists, pseudonyms, and undercover contacts - can be heard from Grove Atlantic's
Senior Editor Peter Blackstock at the "Banned Abroad: Stories of International Censorship" program on Monday, June 26 from
1:00 - 2:30 p.m. at McCormick Place, Room W178a.
Blackstock is joined by Words Without Borders Editorial Director Susan Harris, translator and Ph.D. candidate of Comparative
Literature Inci Sariz and New Vessel Press Co-founder Ross Ufberg. Each panelist has a unique story on international censorship and
banned books. ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom Director James LaRue will lead the discussion on the complications and risks
that accompany publishing and translating "controversial works"- and how these books can find homes on your library's shelves.
This event is co-sponsored by the Office for Intellectual Freedom, the Association of American Publishers and the Global
Literature in Libraries Initiative.
