Page 16 • Cognotes FRIDAY, JUNE 24, 8:00 PM MINE Hailed as “absorbing,” “a must see,” “Oscar material” and “the best movie at SXSW,” MINE is a documentary about the essential bond between humans and animals, set against the backdrop of one of the worst natural disasters in modern U.S. history: Hurricane Katrina. This gripping, characterdriven story follows New Orleans residents as they attempt the daunting task of trying to reunite with their pets who have been adopted by families all over the country, and chronicles the custody battles that arise when two families love the same pet. Who determines the fate of the animals—and the people—involved? A compelling meditation on race, class and the power of compassion, MINE examines how we treat animals as an extension of how we view and treat each other. Brought to you by Film Movement SATURDAY, JUNE 25, 9:00 AM DIARY OF A WIMPY KID Back in middle school after summer vacation, Greg Heffley and his older brother Rodrick must deal with their parents’ misguided attempts to have them bond. The film is based on the bestselling book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules by Jeff Kinney. There are over 50 million Diary of a Wimpy Kid books in print around the world. In February, Amulet Books, an imprint of ABRAMS and publisher of the series, released an updated edition of The Wimpy Kid Movie Diary to include information on the second film. An expanded edition of The Wimpy Kid Do-ItYourself Book—with more than 60 new pages, including more activi- 2011 Annual Conference Preview Update NEW ORLEANS ties and 16 more full-color comics—is the most recent release in the series. This November, it’s a Wimpy Wonderland, when book six in the series goes on sale nationwide. Jeff Kinney will be speaking at 10:30 a.m. in Auditorium B of the Morial Convention Center immediately following the film. Film presented courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Each episode is told in the words of library staff and users, and each includes topical and surprising insights into the ways libraries serve their constituents. Meet Host and Producer of the series, ALA member Czeslaw Jan Grycz, as he introduces a screening of one of the recentlyreleased episodes focusing on The Lila Acheson Wallace Library at The Juilliard School in New York. This wellreceived episode includes a segment on the Juilliard’s fabulous composer Manuscript Collection. Having produced a half dozen acclaimed epi- sodes on an amazingly modest budget, GLOW is now seeking ALA member support to spread the word and get the series picked up by as many PBS stations across the country as possible. SATURDAY, JUNE 25, 6:00 PM THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN AMERICA: DANIEL ELLSBERG AND THE PENTAGON PAPERS The full-length 2010 Oscar-nominated documentary. The film showing falls within the fortieth anniversary of the ten-day period during which Ellsberg and his wife simultaneously went into hiding and disseminated the Pentagon Papers to various publishers including the New York Times and the Washington Post. The Pentagon Papers played an enormous role in turning the tide of public opinion on the Vietnam War. It was the Nixon administration that dubbed Daniel Ellsberg The Most Dangerous Man in America. FREE. Panel discussion afterward, time permitting. Seymour Wishman, President, First Run Feature Films, has been kind enough to make this program possible. SATURDAY, JUNE 25TH, 8:00 PM ALSC PRESENTS “LIBRARY OF THE EARLY MIND” This documentary film is an exploration of the art and impact of children’s literature on our kids, our culture, and ourselves. From the first stories we hear told to us to those childhood heroes that stay with us a lifetime, the impact on our culture runs deeper than what we might expect. “No one suspects the children’s writer,” says author and illustrator Mo Willems, a former ‘Sesame Street’ writer. The film features nearly 40 prominent authors and illustrators talking about their work, its genesis and its impact. The number of books in print by the authors in ‘Library of the Early Mind’ exceeds 240 million. A panel discussion with film producer Ted Delaney will directly follow the film. Sponsored by Media Source, Inc.; Little, Brown; and Macmillan Children’s Book Group. SUNDAY, JUNE 26, 9:00 AM CONNECTED: AN AUTOBLOGOGRAPHY ABOUT LOVE, DEATH & TECHNOLOGY Straight from its acclaimed world premiere at Sundance 2011, the feature documentary “Connected: An Autoblogography about Love, Death & Technology” offers an exhilarating stream-ofconsciousness ride through the interconnectedness of humankind, nature, progress and morality at the dawn of the 21st century. Between texts and tweets, memes and microchips, we’ve become conditioned to break the world down into byte-sized bits. In Connected, Tiffany Shlain—award-winning filmmaker and founder of The Webby Awards—traces interdependence through history, discovering surprising links between right brain and left; honey bees and stress; hormones and happiness; technology and nature; progress and consequences; and parents and children. The result: a personal film with universal resonance. For centuries we’ve declared independence. With insight, curiosity, and humor, Connected explores whether it’s time to declare our interdependence instead. SUNDAY, JUNE 26, NOON WITCHBL ADE In this adaptation of the Top Cow comic book, Witchblade is the story of a New York detective, Sara “Pez” Pezzini, whose search for justice brings her into contact with the Witchblade, an ancient, intelligent, living weapon so powerful it can battle Earth’s darkest evil forces. Week in and week out, “Pez” employs her skills as a police detective to fight crime. She finds she must employ the Witchblade to combat a much greater and frighteningly organized conspiracy of evil that threatens the very soul of humanity. As Sara tries to keep the secret of the Witchblade, do her job and have a personal life, she finds that her most formidable adversary may be the Witchblade itself.
