Page 18 • Cognotes 2011 Annual Conference Preview Update NEW ORLEANS ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year Awards Ceremony Moves to ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans he 13th Annual ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year Awards ceremony will be held in New Orleans at the ALA Annual Conference on Saturday, June 25. Similar to the the Newberry and Caldecott awards, ForeWord’s book awards are recognized internationally by publishers and book industry professionals alike. An overall award for the Best Fiction and Best Nonfiction titles will highlight the competition, in addition to gold, silver, and bronze awards in 60 categories. 2011 will mark the fourth year ForeWord editors honor an Independent Publisher of the Year, a prize assigned to a press that cares more about good ideas and quality writing than profiteering, and represents the best unsung titles that demand our attention and admiration. They use ForeWord as their primary resource for learning about great books from independent presses,” reports publisher Victoria Sutherland. “Making them part of our awards celebration was key to the decision of moving to ALA.” The award ceremony premiered at BookExpo America in 1999. “From a marketing standpoint, ALA makes a lot of sense, particularly for our Book of the Year Awards finalists. For us to announce the winners in front of industry buyers is more than ideal. It could be one of those magic moments that takes a title from ‘interesting’ to ‘wow!,’” said Kimber Bilby, Book of the Year Awards director. “At ALA, presses have a captive audience searching for what’s new, what’s cool, and what will excite their readers.” There is little room for an independent press to gain recognition through other award programs, which typically only notice titles from larger houses.
