ASCLA 'Can't Miss' Events at Annual Conference

reconference: "Becoming a Dementia Friendly Library: Serving People
Living with Dementia in Your Community"
Within the next 10 years the number of
Americans living with dementia is expected
to rise to 7.1 million. Now is the time to
begin addressing the needs of this too often
forgotten population. Libraries should be at
the forefront of the Dementia Friendly initiative that is emerging across the country. This
preconference will provide both background
and tools for designing and implementing
library programs and services that will transform lives in your community.
Preconference: "Unconference: Accessibility and Education, and its implications
for Library Services"
As we mark the 25th Anniversary of the
ADA, it is critical to focus on making education as accessible as possible. I am advocating
a gathering that that will examine accessibility and education and its implications for library services. This will be an Unconference,
and thus be focused on building community
and helping each conference participant ask
questions while we move together toward
a more accessible future for their libraries.

Program: "SitStayRead: How dogs are
improving literacy skills and fostering a love
of learning"
SitStayRead is a nonprofit literacy
organization established in 2003 which
serves 80 classrooms in 16 of Chicago's
low-income public schools. Our program
connects children in 1st through 4th
Grades with trained literacy volunteers

and Certified Reading Assistance Dogs in
a curriculum that develops key literacy and
social-emotional skills.

presentation from the committees who
curated and reviewed hundreds of technology tools and resources to formulate
lists of the best 25. You will not want

to miss being the first to know what
outstanding websites and apps will truly
transform learning for your students!

detail into a selection of the year's lists:

Discover techniques for teaching older
adults to use computers and to find health
information on the Internet. Attendees will
learn what makes a website senior-friendly,
ideas for planning library programs on
senior health topics, and where to locate
health materials for distribution to older
adults within the community.

Refugees - Supporting
Central American
Children in Crisis

Since 2014, approximately 48,000 unaccompanied youth arrive in the U.S. annually
as refugees from Central America. They are
held in 100 detention centers in 12 states
while they await time in court to plead their
case for being granted asylum.

and learn about their Children in Crisis
Project, which seeks to raise awareness
about these vulnerable youth and to provide
resources to them. The program takes place
on Saturday June 24 from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m.
Donations accepted at the door.
