Join writer/director Emilio Estevez for a
screening of his new film "the public," also
starring Alec Baldwin, Taylor Schilling, and
Jeffrey Wright. It centers on the regular patrons of downtown Cincinnati's public library,
many of whom are homeless and marginalized, and their interactions with the library
staff who have built emotional connections
with them. When a bitter Arctic blast hits the
city, the patrons turn the library into a homeless shelter by staging a sit-in, which escalates
into a police standoff. There will be a Q &

Rhymes, and Activities for Mixed Ages with
Saroj Nadkarni Ghoting"

StoryTime Effective Practice (STEP) is
an approach that articulates the link between
child development theory and storytimes. Join
Saroj Nadkarni Ghoting, an early childhood
literacy consultant, who co-developed STEP,
as she shares ideas for adapting books, rhymes,
and activities for mixed ages based on their
stages of development.

Homelessness is a perennial topic of concern at libraries. In fact, staff at public libraries interact with almost as many homeless
individuals as staff at shelters do. Empathy
and understanding, along with specific actionable advice that's drawn from experience,
makes all the difference in working with this
group. In this training Ryan J. Dowd, executive director of the homeless shelter Hessed
House and author of The Librarian's Guide to
Homelessness: An Empathy-Driven Approach
to Solving Problems, Preventing Conflict, and
Serving Everyone, spotlights best practices
