Programming to Inspire and Educate at ALA Annual
Diversity and Outreach Fair
Each year, the ALA Office for Diversity,
Literacy, and Outreach Services invites
library professionals from all kinds of institutions to submit proposals to participate
in the ALA Diversity and Outreach Fair,
which is held during ALA's Annual Conferences. The Fair highlights library services to underserved or underrepresented
communities, including people with disabilities; people experiencing poverty and
homelessness; people of color; Englishlanguage learners; gay, lesbian, bisexual,
and transgender people; new Americans,
new and non-readers; older adults; people
living in rural areas; incarcerated people
and ex-offenders; and mobile library services and bookmobiles. Saturday, June 22
from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m.

Spectrum Leadership
Institute
Considered a highlight of the program, the 2018 Spectrum Scholars will
come together for an intimate weekend of
community-building and leadership development. The curriculum features sessions
with library leaders of color and Spectrum
alumni, opportunities to network with ALA
leadership, and activities designed to foster
deeper connections within the 20-year-old
Spectrum alumni community.
Stonewall Awards Program
The first and most enduring award for
LGBTQ books is the Stonewall Book Awards,
sponsored by the American Library Association's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender
Round Table. The award ceremony includes

remarks by 2019 Stonewall winner and honor
authors, presentation of The Larry Romans
Mentorship Award and The Newlen-Symons
Award for Excellence in Serving the GLBT
Community, and a book signing with participating publishers. Confirmed authors
include Ashley Herring Blake, Isaac Butler,
Kacen Callender, Uzodinma Iweala, Dan
Kois, Eric and Stephani Lohman, Jessica Love,
and Rebecca Makkai. Monday, June 24 from
1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

and the ALA Literacy Clearinghouse (literacy.
ala.org). These free resources will help you
add, expand, and advocate for literacy services
at your library. Learn about model library
literacy programs, resources from across the

how libraries are helping to increase access
and opportunities across multiple literacies.

and Leadership: Where Do We Go From Here?

Join ACRL President Lauren Pressley for
the ACRL President's Program at the 2019
ALA Annual Conference & Exhibition in
Washington, DC. Issues of equity in diverse
workplaces, and the trend towards more inclusive language and policies, often leaves leaders
in the difficult position of navigating the needs
of the organization and the need to help the
organization accommodate today's workforce.

How can leaders effectively influence and
motivate their teams, when the individuals
on those teams struggle with the challenges of
poor communication, collaboration, culture,
change and conflict?
Spranger, author of Why People Stay: Helping Your Employees Feel Seen, Safe, and Valued
addresses contemporary issues around diversity, leadership, and inclusiveness throughout

the employment lifecycle. Through intensive
dialogue, shared narrative, and humor supporting the theoretical material, Spranger shares
an approach to inclusive leadership that leaves
participants energized and engaged. A book
signing will follow. The ACRL President's
Program will be held from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00
p.m. on Saturday, June 22, in room 146A of
the Washington Convention Center.
