adding that the firm was awarded the project after winning a statesponsored competition. "It's great in summer, but in the winter it's
pretty terrible." Solutions included micro-architecture elements
such as moveable fabric screens, which serve as a physical barrier
between guests and the stone walls, and create absorption to help
solve acoustic problems. The screens "give a human scale in the
space, which is just huge," Jouin says.
Elsewhere in the public spaces, Jouin installed firm-designed
furniture along with materials that are in line with the peaceful,
sparse surroundings. "Everything-all the furniture-is simple, with
beautiful materials made by craftsmen," he says. "Just oak, stone,
fabric, leather, and black steel. Simple, raw material."
The 54 guestrooms, located in various parts of the monastery,
are influenced by the architectural elements-with sloping or high
ceilings depending on their location and all with a sense of quiet
comfort to remind guests of the essence of the property. "You know
there were monks here before or there were people here who were
suffering, but it's gone," Jouin says. "We didn't put velvet everywhere
like in an old French castle. We played with the idea that less is
more." The recurring palette of wood, fabric, and metal appears
again, reinforcing the stripped-back nature.

While Jouin wanted to make sure that guests remained cognizant
of the past, the design also ensures a sense of modernity-with
elements of technology such as touchscreen tabletops and tablets
in iBar. The aim was to "create a connection with the present, but
also the possibility for the visitor to be connected with the rest of
the site," he says. "If you touch the screen, you can learn about the
history of the abbey while you are drinking a glass of wine at the bar.
The technology gives you so much power, but they are light, so if you
don't want it, you just turn off the screen and it's gone. It's almost like
a second dimension."
Part of the restored cloister is dedicated to Fontevraud Le
Restaurant, which is designed to maximize views of an interior
courtyard. In some places, contemporary fabric and leather
banquettes are placed on existing stone benches, while large
hanging wooden lights above tables help deal with acoustics. But the
banquettes created specially for couples are Jouin's personal favorite.
"You are facing the garden, and you are close to each other," he says.
"You are not face to face but side by side. Much better when you are
in love." hd
