challenge of creativity office > EDG Interior Architecture + Design Novato, California Design firm EDG found a new home for its growing team in an unexpected place-the decommissioned Hamilton Air Force Base in Novato, California, which had been redeveloped as a creative campus. Built in the 1930s and named for pilot Lloyd Hamilton, the Spanish-style open space at first proved challenging for designers used to working in "what equated to a breadbox," says president and CEO Jennifer Johanson. "With this newfound leg room came the opportunity to work differently." That translated to "neighborhoods" organized around key studios comprising open linear workspaces interjected with meeting tables and standup collaboration areas, she says. There's a presentation gallery to showcase current work as living vignettes; an open kitchen with a handcarved wooden table; a rec room complete with a ping pong table; a bank of plywood pods with sofa seating for teams to "camp out" during charrettes; and a pop-up private dining unit made of plastic that can be folded up to be easily transported created for a chef client now serves as a mini meeting area. A standout though, says Johanson, is "a vintage control tower transformed into a conference room with 180-degree views of the Hamilton wetlands."
