As I write this letter, we are (thankfully) on the last day of deadline for our
largest issue of the year (and less than three weeks to HD Expo). For our small team,
this is a true labor of love, more than 150 edit pages of what we hope demonstrates the
immense and varied talent in this industry, celebrates innovative design, and provides a
bit of inspiration.
Take Sharan Pasricha, CEO of Ennismore, which was just named one of the fastest
growing companies in Europe by the Financial Times. Since buying a boutique hotel in
London's Shoreditch five years ago, he has turned the Hoxton into a hip brand-to-watch
with three open, two coming online this year, and
more in the pipeline. Sitting with Sharan in a café in
Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where one of his next hotels
will be, it was obvious why he was so successful: his
undeniable passion for what he does, and how he
pushes the status quo while at it. Those are the traits
that connect our six seemingly disparate profiles.
The frustrated high-school tennis player in me was
a giddy schoolgirl sitting down with such an icon as
Venus Williams; her honesty and love for all things
design and range of talent was awe-inspiring. And
to get to pick the brains of Richard Born and Ira
Drukier of BD Hotels, the creators of some of New
York's most emulated boutique properties, was an
honor in its own right.
Speaking of Manhattan, when gathering projects for this issue-many are
renovations, many infused with color-we realized a large chunk were in New York.
This mix of new standouts is impressive for many reasons, the least of which is the cast
of characters behind them: Rockwell Group, Danny Meyer, chef Andrew Carmellini,
Barry Sternlicht, AvroKO. Since the city has the most robust development pipeline in
the U.S. (and is in the top five globally) we gave it its own section, looking not only at the
newest and greatest, but also a growing neighborhood, and a few notable debuts.
In fact, our esteemed judges picked a few of the projects as finalists in our annual
HD Awards program-a feat in its own right as they were chosen from some 640 entries
in 20 categories. Winners for both projects and products will be announced during
a celebration on June 7th at Cipriani 25 Broadway in New York. For the complete
