perspectives sketchbook Photos by DAVID WAKELY PHOTOGRAPHY kistler vineyards Design firm: Architectural Resources Group (ARG), San Francisco The details: A few years ago, Kistler Vineyards asked ARG to revamp a historic farmhouse in Sonoma County, California, into its first tasting venue. It became so popular that the firm was asked to create a small winemaking facility with a second tasting room. The solution: to dismantle and recreate a barn on the same location. "We strove to elevate the experience of tasting in the barn by making it unique to the site and the Kistler winemaking process," says ARG principal Naomi Miroglio. "The inspiration was the celebration of the winemaking process, with view windows into the barrel room" so guests can experience the winery's unique fermentation techniques. Rustic reclaimed wood (from the original barn's siding) covering the walls and barrel ceiling and stone walls in the barrel room contrast with the contemporary metal chandeliers inspired by the straps on barrels. The palette was intentionally kept natural, with the only color being the 14-foot-tall metal red doors and crimson chairs lining the custom wood communal table running down the center of the barn, matching the foil on the Kistler Pinot Noir bottles. hospitalitydesign.com May 2017 089http://www.hospitalitydesign.com
