the devil is in the details
In my almost two decades with the magazine, I have been lucky
enough to interview and collaborate with some very talented people-
Danny Meyer, David Rockwell, Liz Lambert, Robert De Niro, and Venus
Williams, and the list goes on. A few times I've had to pinch myself that
this is actually my job. This issue is one such pinchable moment.
I have spoken with and met Ian Schrager many times in my career
and had the chance to sit down with him in 2015 with guest editor
Jason Pomeranc, founder and owner of SIXTY Hotels. It goes without
saying that I have always admired how Ian reinvented the industry with
the boutique hotel, but I am even more enamored with his passion and
tenacity. He's never afraid to start anew, knowing that "so much effort and passion goes into
creating something," he says.
In fact, I have asked Ian to be our guest editor before. He was always too busy to take on
the role, so imagine my surprise, and shock, when he responded in five minutes accepting the
job. "A good relationship is always mutually supportive," he told me in that email. And trust
me, being our guest editor is no small feat-he and his team were charged with choosing the
theme, and every person and project to make the issue a reality.
Thanks to his deep Rolodex and many friends and collaborators, the issue is chockfull of
inspiring innovators-greats like Herzog & de Meuron and John Pawson; rising starchitect
Ole Scheeren; Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson; fashion icon Norma Kamali; and, of course,
Ian's talented in-house team. In his edit letter on page 16, he delves into why he chose each
one, but in essence, it is for his deep respect for their originality.
There are many stories of Ian, a lot surrounding his meticulous attention to detail-
Philippe Starck's letter to him on page 136 calls him a beast with a red pen, and at PUBLIC,
he reportedly had the concrete floors redone twice to get it just right. But that laser focus is
what has made him so successful, first with Studio 54 and now with EDITION and PUBLIC
hotels. As he says in his memoir (on page 23), every detail is important since he doesn't know
which is the one that "pushes something over the top."
For that story, I sat down with Ian for two hours in his New York office. I could have
stayed for two more. Ian is a born storyteller, which is evident if you've spent time in
his hotels. Even more so with the release of his Studio 54 book and documentary, which
showcase the wild cultural phenomenon that the nightclub was through press clippings,
photos, lost video footage, and interviews. In these pages, he opens up about how it was a life
preserver for him and how being so in love with the place ultimately resulted in income tax
evasion ("I am still embarrassed," he says). Forty years after Studio, he was ready to set the
record straight for himself and his family. I'm just glad I was able to be a fly on the wall.
At the end of our conversation he confided to me that "money isn't important, it's
the balance. I have a great wife, a great family, and I love what I do. I have everything.
Unfortunately, you don't figure it out until you're older. That's the problem."
