finalist select-service public space Element Moline Illinois To retrofit a century-old warehouse into the 96-key Element Moline, Chicago firms Sheedy/DeLaRosa Interiors and Legat Architects used the public spaces to honor the building's roots by exposing the original ceilings, floors, and columns, as well as replacing the brick at the entryway with floor-to-ceiling glass to bring in natural light. "By repurposing a historic building, the project not only reinforces the brand's eco-conscious mission but also appeals to a Millennial mindset," says Legat Architects' senior architect April Maifield. Notes designer Natalie Sheedy: "This project adds a contemporary twist to public spaces while still celebrating [the building's original] components."
