It has been a strange, unnerving, challenging, and

humbling time for everyone as we adapt to this new way of
life. As I sit here an arm's length away from three kids (the
longest I have been home with them since maternity leave),
I am constantly reminded of our new reality.
We at HD are thinking of you all and hope you and your
families are safe and healthy. Like most of you, we had to
pivot-to working from home, to thinking more digitally,
to figuring out what work-life balance means in this new
abnormal. Case in point: This is the first time in my almost
two decades at HD that we have published an entire issue
remotely. It may not seem like a tough feat, but for our
inherently collaborative and tight-knit team, it was a new
challenge. As I have heard during many conversations with industry members, my team's
ability to adjust has been extraordinary. A big shout out to them for pulling together one of
our largest issues of the year from their laptops spread across New York. (And thank you to
our advertisers for sticking with us even without HD Expo + Conference this year.)
The devastation that COVID-19 has caused the hospitality and design industries is
heartbreaking. I could have never imagined that so many restaurants and hotels would
be closed indefinitely, longstanding companies would shutter, and furloughs and layoffs
would become commonplace. Our hearts go out to all of those affected. At the same time, it
has been truly inspiring to see our industry rally together to support each other, essential
workers, and those on the front lines.
We started working on this issue before the gravity of the situation hit home. Though
we added stories on how COVID-19 is impacting our industry (we connect with eight
leaders starting on page 43 to find out how they are adapting, and AHLA president and
CEO Chip Rogers gives his perspective on page 94), we decided to keep much of the original
content intact. Simply, we just wanted to celebrate the industry we love. Before COVID-19,
a slew of amazing hotels and restaurants debuted, coworking was flourishing, wineries
were being reinvented, and offices were adding hotel-like amenity spaces. We thought
showcasing amazing design would offer inspiration and show a bit of love to those who have
been hit the hardest.
Despite everything, there is good news. Based on the webinars we've produced with
the A+D and hotel communities, though some work has been put on hold, development
and projects are continuing, hotels are starting to reopen, and people are slowly wanting to
travel again. But with change comes new obstacles and bringing our industry back means
confronting many short- and longterm unknowns as we shift from a sharing economy to a
safe economy. What protocols and products will make a hotel feel safer and cleaner? How
do we social distance in spaces meant to bring people together?
It's too soon to answer some of these questions, but we are exploring many of these
topics online on hospitalitydesign.com and in our weekly webinars, and will continue
coverage in upcoming issues. If you have thoughts or feedback, please reach out to me or
our team. We are here for you. This industry has always been resilient. We will come out
stronger on the other side of this. #hospitalitystrong
