Welcome to our second annual Product Marketplace. As
people continue to work from home without their sample
library at arm's reach, and with most industry events and
tradeshows sidelined until 2021, it may be more important than
ever for this issue to showcase some of the innovative product
design that continues despite the pandemic. And thanks to
months of gathering ideas, this tabloid is chockfull of more
than 140 beautiful pieces, from wallcoverings and seating to
casegoods and bedding, and everything in between.
Plus, we delve even further into the story and process behind
the products-a request from our editorial advisory board. In
Spec Sheet, for instance, we look at which products were picked
and why in four cool new hotels. In our Process section, we get
a behind-the-scenes look into how five products were made. For
an even more holistic look, our various interviews with veteran
and on-the-rise industrial designers share the motivation and
thought processes behind their standout creations. We also pick the brains of four 3D digital artists
who are pushing the limits of the innovative medium for an extra dose of inspiration.
A big thanks to our associate/products editor Matt Dougherty, who project managed this issue. To
that end, I asked him to weigh in on the process: "We've only put this issue together twice so far, but
it's quickly becoming one of my favorites that we do during the year. As Liqui Group founder Cameron
Fry-the face of one of seven designer profiles we hope you will find illuminating in these pages-puts
it: 'Designing a product feels like designing a personality. It's almost like creating a character, whereas
an interior is more about designing an experience.' During a normal year as the products editor, I get
to meet more of these characters than one can possibly remember through tradeshows, showroom
events, and one very crowded inbox. 2020 has only really made one of those avenues possible, at the
sacrifice of physical touch and in-person experiences.
But beautiful objects kept making their way to me, and in the midst of everything that has
challenged us this year, these characters were the one part of the design story that didn't feel like it
ever slowed down. To me, it's been resounding proof of the resilience of human creativity and passion.
As a result, these larger-than-usual pages are loaded with over 140 products, from typically innovative
lighting and outdoor concepts to the unexpected objects hospitality spaces now need to survive
during the pandemic (but with style!). The challenges we face as an industry are far from over, but the
unending inspiration that comes as we put this issue together is a major bright spot. Keep it coming."
