Mark Patterson, Vice President, is the
leader for the firm's Healthcare Studio
in Phoenix, Arizona. Since joining
the firm in 2004, he has led the studio
to numerous successful completions
that have brought forth innovative,
award-winning designs for healing
environments. Recently completed
projects for Patterson include several
for longtime client Banner Health,
including the Banner Estrella Medical
Center Expansion and a prototype
Banner Health Center outpatient clinic.
Among projects currently underway for Patterson are the $90 million
Craig Rehabilitation Hospital Expansion in Englewood, Colorado,
which will create the hospital's new spinal cord injury and traumatic
brain injury rehabilitation center in 2015; and strategic planning for
Capital Health in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Patterson is certified
by the American College of Healthcare Architects, and is an EDAC and
LEED-accredited professional. He graduated from the University of
Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and is a past president of the Arizona and
Central Arizona chapters of the American Institute of Architects.
Architecture was a natural fit for Mark. "I recall 'designing' houses
when I was in third grade," he says. "Several people influenced my
career choice, including my father-in-law who was a carpenter and my
great-uncle who was an Amish clockmaker." His 33-year career has
since taken a decidedly high-tech turn: Mark's studio at SmithGroupJJR
specializes in providing innovative, data-driven design and successfully
executed healing environments. "The integration of technology has been
profound," he notes. "The way we deliver projects and the speed at which
we are able to create project solutions has been revolutionized with
mobile technologies and construction delivery innovations. Healthcare
delivery itself continues to evolve, posing new opportunities to reinvent
the spaces we design for healing. It's an exciting time of transformation."

Stanford, California
Mark Tortorich, FAIA, is
the Vice President of Planning,
Design, and Construction at
Stanford Medical Center and
joined the organization in 2005.
He provides capital facilities
leadership for both Stanford
Children's Health and Stanford
Health Care. In this capacity,
Tortorich supervises the project and construction management teams for capital facilities
projects, represents the hospitals
in capital planning coordination
with Stanford University, and led the planning, design, and land use
approvals for the $5 billion hospital renewal and replacement program.
From 1998 to 2005, Tortorich was a Vice President and Healthcare
Principal for URS Corporation, one of the largest, fully integrated
architecture, engineering, construction, and technical services firms.
He also served as the Design and Construction Manager for the U.S.
General Services Administration from 1983 to 1998. While in the
private sector, he remains a Design Excellence Peer Professional for
the U.S. General Services Administration. Mark Tortorich is a Cal
Poly San Luis Obispo graduate, a licensed architect, and Fellow of the
American Institute of Architects.

Shane Williams is a Principal and
Practice Area Leader for Design at
Array with over 20 years' experience
in Architectural design. Having been
a part of some amazing opportunities
around the world in corporate, hospitality, sports and commercial design,
healthcare has been Shane's passion for
the past 15 years. The personal impact
for healthcare architecture is unique
and the passion and caring exhibited
by all participants in every project is
exceptionally gratifying.
Shane's design background features international hotel destination
projects as well as large healthcare campus design. As a result, he is
able to infuse hospitality elements that enhance the patient experience
while respecting the operational efficiency. As Practice Area Leader for
design, Shane ensures that every project's "big idea" is translated into
the smallest of details. The impacts that healthcare designs have are
very rewarding. The experiences created, that caregivers, patients and
families depend on, depend on design.
