The design of the Mount Sinai Leon and Norma Hess Center for
Science and Medicine in New York, New York, is driven by the concept
that it is a vehicle for healing and discovery. Its mechanisms for achieving
its purpose are translation and collaboration, therefore, its design solution
focuses on creating a healing environment that fosters interaction.
Material selections for both the exterior and interior are sophisticated
and technical while imparting a comfort and warmth. The needs of
academic research, clinical medicine and the community on an iconic
campus were thoughtfully combined with this design. The clean form
and refined details enable this facility to stand comfortably alongside its
prominent neighbors. In a context-sensitive urban setting, this facility
creates a bench-to-bed (or clinic exam room) facility accommodates a wide
variety of research efforts while still being welcoming to patients.
While the design creates ideal conditions for both clinical and research
activities, most importantly it emphasizes the connection between the
two. By highlighting the ties between the patients and the researchers
exploring cures to their diseases, the Hess Center creates a profound sense
of immediacy.

This project is an understated and beautiful
response to the difficult functional program
of translational medicine. This is an
exemplary solution of how design can foster
interdisciplinary collaboration between
departments and research teams.
