Who they are: While it took a
coalition of community and business leaders to bring a new public
safety-net hospital to Indianapolis,
two individuals stand at the forefront
of that movement: Matthew Gutwein
and Dr. Lisa Harris. Gutwein serves
as president and CEO of Health &
Hospital Corp. of Marion County, the parent organization to Eskenazi Health;
Harris has been practicing medicine at Eskenazi Health for more than 30 years
and was named CEO in 2004. The two joined forces in 2009 to lead a campaign
seeking voter approval for a new hospital campus. The odds were stacked:
The seven previous referendums on public spending in Indiana all failed and the
economy was still poor. Gutwein and Harris took to the streets, speaking to more
than 200 civic and community groups to build their case for
a new facility. Voters passed the referendum with 85 percent
approval. Throughout the four-year project, the duo stayed
involved, guiding the campus design, updating the community
on the project's progress, and providing tours to federal, state,
and local lawmakers and community leaders. They also played
active roles in the Eskenazi Health Capital Campaign, working
with its foundation to raise more than $87 million in philanthropic
funds for the project.
Year in review: December 2013 brought the opening of the
Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital and Eskenazi Health campus, a
1.2 million-square-foot replacement facility, which also serves as
a teaching hospital for the Indiana University School of Medicine
and is home to a Level 1 trauma center and the state's largest
burn unit. Gutwein and Harris spent the last year watching the
campus come to life. In its first 12 months, total inpatient visits
increased by more than 1,400 to 21,860. The number of babies
born at the facility as well as inpatient visits at the Richard M.
Fairbanks Burn Center and the Smith Level 1 Shock Trauma
Center were also up. In addition, the 37-acre health campus is
on track to achieve LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green
Building Council.
What's next: Addressing changes related to healthcare reform and population health management will remain top of mind
at Eskenazi Health. Harris says she'll stay focused on transitioning from volume- to value-based care and the shift from treating
disease to promoting health.-AD
