kitchen's central location makes access to food services by the public and inpatient units much more efficient. Preliminary results already indicate a positive trend in the average hospital census. Future expansion has also been considered-the central core services area facilitates an efficient flow to all patient areas as well as expansion in any direction. The interconnected café and daylight-filled waiting areas for the hospital services and specialty clinic maximize the hospital's current investment, but leave room "around the edges" for the facility to grow with maximum efficiency and minimal disruption to services. Perhaps most importantly, operational efficiency and a tight budget do not preclude aesthetically pleasing design. The project leverages the outdoors, color, and other simple touches to create a healing environment. Oversized windows pull light into the building and provide tranquil views from the hilltop site. Color is an integral part of the hospital's wayfinding strategy and includes artwork depicting familiar natural landmarks as well as selections from local artists. Architectural features include a central lobby fireplace and stone canopy which frames the mountain view from the front door. The result is a new facility which is both grounded in and enhances the community that it serves. Supplement to Healthcare Design * 08.16 125
