HEALTHY OUTLOOK FOR
GREEN DESIGN
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND healthy interiors are priorities in healthcare design that are here to stay-that's one
of the takeaways from the eighth annual Sustainability
Benchmark Report released earlier this year by Practice
Greenhealth. "Healthcare systems are now linking sustainability to both their mission and values, and to their
bottom line," says Cecilia DeLoach Lynn, director of sector performance and recognition at Practice Greenhealth
(Reston, Va.). "They are recognizing the implications for
sustainability that go beyond just being 'green'-the links
to patient and staff health and community well-being."
The report is based on environmental performance
and sustainability data from 322 hospitals. Some of the
findings include:
* Forty-five percent of survey participants said they've
added language to contract specifications that
building contractors will follow LEED or Green
Guide for Health Care requirements and provide
documentation.
* Sixty-eight percent of participants said they've
consciously selected flooring, wall coverings, paints,
materials, finishes, furniture, or exterior materials that
avoid chemicals of concern.
* Fifty-one percent of participating facilities have engaged a retrocommissioning firm to optimize building
performance.
Lynn says many practices, such as introducing daylighting, that were once considered innovative are now
standard practice and that more hospital systems are exploring on-site energy production or renewable energy
systems. "The drivers for these changes-cost reduction,
energy security, and employee/patient health-are going to remain even in the face of a changing reimbursement/payer system," she says. For more on the report,
