studio Crucial Detail, is best known for his serviceware concepts for Alinea restaurant in Chicago.
He's regularly tasked with creating an appropriate
vessel that would allow a frozen palate cleanser to
be served without melting, honey to be seamlessly
extracted from a honeycomb tableside, or liquor to
be infused with ingredients in real time-all innovatively and elegantly.
He shared his design process-and the beautiful
results-during a presentation at the recent Healthcare Design Forum in Cape Neddick, Maine. And when asked about how long
it usually takes to bring a piece from concept to reality, he quipped that it depends on when the client needs it. Suddenly, serviceware and healthcare design didn't seem like such foreign disciplines. After all, you know a thing or two
about creating an environment that will facilitate and support a client's goals,
and the time in which you have to do that is always subject to change.
It was a perfect and subtle parallel-and that's really the goal at Forum. This
event isn't intended to be deeply immersed in healthcare design but rather to
inspire it. Additional speakers included Pagan Kennedy, author of "Inventology: How We Dream Up Things That Change the World," who revealed how
some of the most well-used inventions were born (by identifying problems
that no one else notices, seeing the potential in materials others classify as
waste). Next, Chris Rockwell, CEO of human experience consultancy firm
Lextant, shared the results of his organization's study of patient-centered care
and how and why experience matters.
Of course, we couldn't leave Maine without looking more deeply at what's on
the minds of industry members today (alongside other important activities like
a lobster bake and local beer tasting). Small groups of multidisciplinary teams-
owners, architects, interior designers, vendors, and consultants-convened to
tackle topics chosen by attendees at the outset: improving patient satisfaction,
achieving innovation, and managing tight budgets and short schedules. Teams
came up with solutions including ways to use technology to ease the patient
journey, strategies to show clients an innovation might work and is worth taking a risk, and pre-planning measures to ensure a streamlined project delivery.
Altogether, our speakers and collective conversations got the wheels turning, shifting perspectives on new ways to approach our work. And a stunning
oceanfront locale allowed everyone to take a deep breath of salty sea air before
heading back to the office to start applying what was learned. More from the
