NEXT MONTH, industry leaders will gather in Orlando, Fla., for a ritual that

has been taking place, in one form or another, every fall for nearly three
decades. From Nov. 11-14, healthcare and design professionals, product
manufacturers, academics, students, and policy-makers from around the
world will gather to see old friends, learn about
new resources, and hear from some of the brightTHE QUALITY, BREADTH,
est minds in our industry at the Healthcare Design
AND DEPTH OF
Expo & Conference.
I've been fortunate to be at all but the very first
PROGRAMMING MAKE
of these programs and to watch over the decades
THE HCD EXPO UNIQUE.
as this event has grown, from a seed of an idea
among a small group of like-minded people to a
rich and diverse platform where thousands gather for four days of experiential learning that's focused on the many ways the built environment can
contribute to quality and safety outcomes in healthcare environments.
One of the many aspects of the HCD Expo that makes it a unique experience is the quality, breadth, and depth of the programming. With more
than 100 educational offerings available, from deep-dive workshops to
small-scale interactive discussion groups, it's easy to find a format that
works best for the way you learn.
The Center for Health Design manages the educational content for the
show, working with a team of industry leaders from a wide variety of backgrounds and organizations to create the program. The topics covered are
equally diverse, ranging from case studies on large-scale international
projects and key changes in the codes and standards impacting design to
the latest research in the design of behavioral health facilities and new approaches in retail health that are shaping ambulatory care spaces. There's
an expo hall full of products to touch and tours of healthcare facilities
where you can learn firsthand what worked and what didn't. And when
you feel you just can't absorb any more new knowledge, there are receptions, networking events, and a fun evening party where you can relax and
catch up with colleagues and friends.
It's not always easy to take five or six days out of your schedule to attend
a conference, but over the years I've learned that this event is so much
more than an expo hall or an educational session. At its core, it is the
nucleus for change and growth personally, professionally, and industry
wide. It's a place where you'll find individuals whose desire to make a difference through their work will fuel your own desires to do the same, and
where you'll leave feeling a little more optimistic about the future. I hope
to see you there. 
