FRANK MURDOCK PITTS, founding partner and president of Architecture+
(Troy, N.Y.), began his career in the 1970s and was quickly drawn to work on
behavioral healthcare facilities at a time when few in the industry were doing such work. "All you had to do was visit a psychiatric hospital and see how
full of despair they were," he said. "And they shouldn't be. They should be joyful places that give people a chance. It just seemed like I had to do it."
Colleague Joan Saba, partner at NBBJ, called Pitts "a lone voice at the time,"
during her interview with Pitts as part of The Center for Health Design's
Changemaker Award ceremony at the HCD Expo. The Center recognized Pitts
for spending his career becoming an advocate, educator, and designer who's
internationally recognized for his impact on the planning and design of psychiatric facilities.
Saba and Pitts discussed his career and all that's changed over the decades
but focused on the evolution in behavioral health that's taking place today.
"The economics, understanding, and science of behavioral healthcare is
changing," he said. "I think we're in a moment where we're about to change
everything." This evolution in thinking is allowing more patients to be identified and brought into treatment earlier, which is creating demand for facilities that are safe but also allow patients to prosper. "The nuts and bolts are
important," Pitts said. "But the moment is calling for more."-Anne DiNardo,

Healthcare Design and Contract magazines, in
partnership with The Center for Health Design,
named the winners of the 2018 Nightingale
Awards during the HCD Expo. Named after
Florence Nightingale, the awards recognize a
product's contribution to the healing environment
as well as its functionality, durability, quality,
aesthetics and style, and pricing.
A 12-member jury panel of healthcare architects, interior designers, and facility managers
selected Krug's Ascend Patient Recliner with
Vertical Lift as the Best of Competition. The chair
was also honored with a Gold Award and Innovation Award in Furniture: Clinician Support.

celebrated the winners of its annual Design Showcase and Remodel/Renovation Competition programs during an awards
luncheon at the HCD Expo. Representatives from the project teams joined
Editor-in-Chief Jennifer Kovacs Silvis on stage to accept their awards
(Showcase winners pictured above). Also honored during the luncheon were
the winners of Healthcare Design's inaugural Rising Star awards program.
