The 2019 HCD Expo will add to the healthcare

FOR THE FIRST time in its history, the Healthcare

Design Expo & Conference will make a stop in New
Orleans. And there's a good reason for that: Healthcare business is booming. Just take two huge projects that came online there in recent years, the
$1.1 billion University Medical Center in 2015 and
the $1 billion VA Medical Center in 2016.
But there's been plenty of steady growth in this
sector beyond the headline-grabbing projects.
It's what one news outlet in the Big Easy called a
"healthcare industry explosion." An article by Kim
Singletary in Biz New Orleans magazine compiled several of the noteworthy
projects that have colored the healthcare landscape in the region. Here are
some highlights of those and a few others:
* Ochsner Health System, Louisiana's largest nonprofit, academic, multispecialty health system and the largest employer in the state, celebrated more
than a half-dozen openings of clinics and health centers. Those projects
include the Ochsner Cancer Center - Baton Rouge, a 20,000-square-foot
facility that was part of the organization's pledged $100 million expansion
into the Greater Baton Rouge region, which includes development of a new
medical office building, microhospital, and surgical center as well as the expansion of several new clinics across multiple parishes.
* The Family Doctors, a division of West Jefferson Medical Center, opened a
new primary care clinic at Plaquemines Medical Center.
* The Tulane University Medical Group opened Tulane Orthopaedic Spine
Center at East Jefferson General Hospital's campus as well as the $1.1 million Professional Athlete Care Team Clinic for former professional athletes
as part of the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine. Additionally, Tulane
opened the Tulane Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Tulane
Lakeside Hospital for Women and Children and a $3.8 million bone marrow
transplant unit expansion.
* Children's Hospital opened its Children's Pediatrics clinic in Laplace, while
CrescentCare broke ground on a $23 million comprehensive health center.
New Orleans East Hospital opened the New Orleans East Clinic, Tulane.
* The new River Place Behavioral Health, an 82-bed inpatient facility that's a
joint venture between Ochsner Health System and Acadia Healthcare, repurposes the existing River Parishes Hospital building to provide mental
healthcare services to the region.
Other projects have also been completed or are in development across the
area, bringing an extra dose of energy and excitement to our own time spent
in the city. As always, we'll hold facility tours during the HCD Expo and will
announce details later this year. But given what's been unfolding, you may
want to plan some extra time to schedule visits of your own, as well.
Registration will open in late June, so be sure to clear your calendar now for
the HCD Expo Nov. 2-5. 
