W HO HE I S : Dr. Anthony Perry joined Rush
University Medical Center in 1991 as an internal medicine resident. His first leadership role
was as chief medical resident in 1994 and first
administrative role in 2001 was leading a freestanding facility that provided inpatient and
outpatient services for older adults. In fact,
Perry's clinical practice is in geriatric medicine, which he continues today. Meanwhile, his
administrative roles at Rush have gone on to
include serving on the original Rush Office of
Transformation team that managed delivery
of its newest inpatient building, known as The
Tower, completed in 2012. In 2017, he began
leading the Rush Ambulatory Transformation
Center. Reporting to the CEO, the office focuses on three scopes of work: delivery of new
and novel outpatient facilities, advancement of
patient-facing digital solutions, and evolution
of the outpatient practice environment.

cancer and neurological care. Hallmarks of the
project, expected to be completed in 2022, are
team care areas that further the organization's
Lean journey and a patient experience that
minimizes waiting and maximizes time with
providers, as well as built-in flexibility for the
evolution of its programs over time.
INDUSTRY IMPACT: Perry recognizes that ambulatory care is an incredibly dynamic field,
with care delivery evolving as healthcare touch
points are increasingly occurring via telehealth
visits or at local walk-in clinics. This shift also
means that the acuity of the patients who require in-person care will increase. Together,
these changes will necessitate programming
that evolves both digitally and in physical spaces, all driven by customer expectations for ease
of access and excellent service. Perry and his
team are responding to that with a mission to
innovate, delivering outpatient facilities that
integrate solutions that improve throughput
and staff efficiency, integrate technology, create a seamless patient experience, and achieve
programmatic flexibility-and it's a roadmap
for healthcare organizations across the country
that are working to do the same.

Y E A R I N R E V I E W : Over the past 12 months,
Perry's work in the transformation center
included managing the launch of Rush operations in two new buildings. The first was
a 40,000-square-foot site in Chicago's South
Loop neighborhood that houses 20 specialties
and an array of diagnostic services. The second
was a 100,000-square-foot joint venture in Oak
Brook, Ill., that includes a large sports medicine
and orthopedic component as well as an ambulatory surgery center, diagnostic services, and
18 specialties. Both were completed with an eye
on making operational improvements. And the
reason the transformation office oversaw those
projects was to ensure that each successive one
was a learning experience for the next, with all
lessons gleaned being fed into the design of
Rush's 450,000-square-foot destination center,
the Joan and Paul Rubschlager Building. Partnering with HDR, Perry and his team are now
guiding creation of the center that will house

Perry's upcoming year will be focused on progressing the Rubschlager project
with a focus on operational flows for patients
and staff and establishing a digital front door
for outpatient care that will be integrated organizationally-each unique endeavors that will
together help deliver the vision for outpatient
