A review of a year in healthcare design yields several

LAST YEAR, I gave a trend presentation at HCD
Forum, our annual invitation-only event for
senior-level healthcare design professionals. We
recognized that while all of you are busy with the
daily ins and outs of shaping what healthcare environments are today and will become tomorrow,
you don't necessarily have time to analyze what it
all means. My unique 30,000-foot view provides an
opportunity to weave some of it together.
This month, I'll do it again at the HCD Forum
taking place at The Biltmore Estate in Asheville,
N.C. It's a great exercise for me, too, to pause, reflect, and digest what we've
seen this year and the storylines that have emerged. Here's a quick preview.
Experience-Patient satisfaction and experience continue to be top-ofmind for healthcare providers. And projects delivered recently are answering
that in a more comprehensive way than we've seen in years past-especially
in patient and family spaces. Thoughtful considerations today include patient controls for lighting, music, room temperature, etc. Favorites of mine
are rooms that accommodate a day's worth of activities, such as exam spaces
where weight and height checks, blood work, and scheduling are all performed
or private prep/recovery rooms where patients change, store belongings, and
return after a procedure.
Nature-Access to nature and daylighting is a baseline expectation in
healthcare design today, but now we're seeing projects fully integrate nature
throughout. For example, project sites are inspiring design solutions: A cancer
center located on ecologically restored land uses extensive glazing to reduce
the lines between inside and out to achieve holistic healing, and a children's
behavioral health center is shaped by a whimsical treehouse concept inspired
by its heavily wooded locale. Interior aesthetics only continue this trend, with
natural colors and elements like stone and wood present in most projects.
Pediatrics-Across the board, no project type has been as hot this year as
children's healthcare. We're seeing providers answer the specific needs of this
patient population across project types, too, including inpatient, outpatient,
and specialty care. Frequently, projects are built on existing campuses, or even
within existing buildings, requiring thoughtful responses to the visitor experience by establishing a unique but branded identity. And distraction is the name
of the game today, with technology and lighting frequently used to achieve interactive elements while large-scale installations (think a train and fire truck
cab) go the extra mile.
That's just a peek at what we've seen at Healthcare Design this year. I encourage you, too, to pause for a moment and consider the same-I'd love to hear
what comes to mind. 
