In building its first mental hospital since
1952, the state of Indiana did not choose simply
to bring its offerings up to par with the latest
mental health practices; instead, it leapt into the
future with a facility that will serve as a model for
others, in both operation and design. The first
of its kind, this 159-bed facility delivers expert
neuro-diagnostic evaluation and treatment
for patients upon their arrival and moves them
efficiently into the most appropriate treatment
settings within the community or state mental
health system.
The NeuroDiagnostic Institute and Advanced
Treatment Center (NDI) presented design
challenges that demanded truly innovative solutions. The design team built on mental health
best practices to invent a new environment for
diagnosing and treating mental health challenges.
The NDI reengineers Indiana's network of
state-operated mental health facilities, serving
as a centralized site for diagnosing and developing treatment plans for patients of all ages and
with a wide range of brain-related illnesses.
Unique among mental hospitals for its vertical
configuration, the new building successfully
separates its diverse populations without impeding smooth operations and maintains high
levels of security in a truly healing environment.
