How has the COVID-19
pandemic affected your firm
and the way you practice
architecture? 
GMI Architects has focused
on programming, planning,
and the design of behavioral
healthcare facilities for over
40 years. The current pause
in our workload has provided
us with the opportunity to
reimagine the Therapeutic
Environment of Care.
Prior to COVID-19, we
were concerned about a

recent trend toward a "harder,"
more institutional environment
fomented by regulatory scrutiny
of ligature issues. This trend is
upsetting the critical balance
between safety and security
versus comfort and character.
That trend, plus challenges
from clients in the formative
stages of projects, inspired GMI
to develop an analytical white
paper: Redefining "State of the
Art" in the Therapeutic Setting.
