Spring has arrived and with this time of renewal we bring to you the latest news and information
regarding the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease through our BioTherapeutics Quarterly
journal. In this issue, we are providing information on type 1 diabetes, decline in routine vaccinations
during COVID-19 pandemic of Medicare beneficiaries, CDC recommendations for patients with a tick
bite and many more topics.
The American Cancer Society has published LGTBQ People and Cancer Fact Sheet which can be found
beginning on page 12. The fact sheet outlines information on health disparities and increased cancer risk
in this community. Turn to page 12 for more information.
MMWR: Decline in Receipt of Vaccines by Medicare Beneficiaries During the COVID-19
Pandemic-United States, 2020 beginning on page 21 discusses how the CDC initially issued guidance
recommending postponing routine adult vaccinations, which was later revised to recommend continuing
to administer routine adult vaccines. In addition, factors such as disrupted operations of health care facilities and safety concerns
regarding exposure to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, resulted in delay or avoidance of routine medical care,
likely further affecting delivery of routine adult vaccinations.
The ACIP recommends routine human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for male and female adolescents aged 11 or 12 years old,
beginning as early as age 9, with catch-up vaccination for all people through age 26, and shared clinical decision making before
vaccination decisions for those aged 27 to 45. Although uptake of HPV vaccination has increased since its initial recommendation,
rural populations have lower rates of initiation and completion compared with their urban counterparts, particularly in the southern
United States. PCD: Spatial Access to Vaccines for Children Providers in South Carolina: Implications for HPV Vaccination,
starting on page 27, discusses how in South Carolina, rural residents aged 13 to 17 years have lower rates of HPV vaccination
initiation compared with their urban counterparts.
MMWR: The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices' Interim Recommendation for Use of Pfizer-BioNTech
COVID-19 Vaccine in Adolescents Aged 12-15 Years - United States, May 2021 on page 33 outlines the latest ACIP guidance
issued on May 12, 2021 that recommends the use of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in adolescents aged 12-15 years for the
prevention of COVID-19.
