Summer has arrived and as 2020 gains speed, the BioTherapeutics Quarterly journal strives to
bring you the latest information on topics that are of interest to you, the health care practitioner.
Whether you've been treating patients throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, looking to return to
your previous case load, or are reopening after a complete hiatus, Henry Schein Medical remains
ready as your partner for patient health. The BioTherapeutics Quarterly's goal is to provide our
loyal customers current, relative information on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment
of disease.
In the United States, approximately 1.4 million persons access emergency shelter or transitional
housing each year. These settings can pose risks for communicable disease spread. In late March
and early April 2020, public health teams responded to clusters of COVID-19 in residents and
staff members from five homeless shelters in Boston, Massachusetts; San Francisco, California;

On March 13, 2020, the president of the United States declared a national emergency in response to the COVID-19
pandemic. With reports of laboratory-confirmed cases in all 50 states by that time, disruptions were anticipated in the
U.S. health care system's ability to continue providing preventative and other nonemergency care. On March 24, the CDC
posted guidance emphasizing the importance of routine well child care and immunization, particularly for children aged ≤24

Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) remains a major public health problem, with an 80%-100% case-fatality rate among
neonates, especially in areas with poor immunization coverage and limited access to clean deliveries and umbilical cord
care. In 1989, the World Health Assembly endorsed the elimination of neonatal tetanus (NT), and in 1999, the initiative
was relaunched and remained the MNT elimination initiative, targeting 59 priority countries. MMWR: Progress Toward
Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination -Worldwide, 2000-2018 beginning on page 22, summarizes progress
towards achieving MNT elimination.
Hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The prevalence of hypertension is higher among
men than among women, increases with age, is highest among non-Hispanic blacks, and has been consistently
highest in the Southeastern and Appalachian regions of the United States. To learn more, read MMWR Prevalence
