Meet
John
John, 69, is a Minnesota resident and Army veteran who lives with his wife, Julie. John suffers from a progressive
neurological condition with no treatment or cure that impairs his speech and vision, causes a loss of sensation in his
arms and legs, and makes him unable to walk or stand for long periods of time.
The Problem
Dental health was also a concern as John was missing many teeth and the ones he had remaining were loose,
making eating painful and resulted in major weight loss. Due to his health problems, John is no longer able to work
and survives off of Social Security benefits, leaving him unable to afford the treatment necessary to address his
dental health problems.
How We Helped
This all changed when a team of DLN's Donated Dental Services (DDS) volunteers came to his aid. An oral surgeon
provided full-mouth extractions while a general dentist, Dr. Andy Wilcox, with the help of a volunteer lab, completed
full upper and lower dentures. The generosity of these volunteers provided John with thousands of dollars in
life-changing treatment and he can now eat comfortably and feel confident in his smile.
" Finally, John is able to smile again and is pain-free, which is the most important part! This has been a life-changing
experience for him and our entire family. " - said Julie, John's wife.
