How Henry Schein Is
Protecting the richness and beauty of our planet is a key pillar of Henry Schein's commitment to
" helping health happen. " Whether our Team Schein Members are finding new ways to conserve
energy at the workplace or improving our facilities, we continue to support programs that reduce our
carbon footprint and promote sustainability.
In order to reduce our carbon footprint, Henry Schein
announced the closing of one of our corporate
headquarter buildings in 2022. Our headquarters at
Melville West remains, and is one building comprised of
105,000 square feet. In the fourth quarter of 2013, this
building was recognized with a LEED Certified Silver
rating by the U.S. Green Building Council.
1. LEED CERTIFICATION
Our office in Melville, NY achieved LEED
(Leadership in Energy and Design) Certification
* This certification recognizes that our corporate office
has been designed to conserve energy and water,
reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions, and be
safer and healthier for workers
* According to the U.S. Green Building Council,
companies that participate in the LEED
process demonstrate " leadership, innovation,
environmental stewardship, and social responsibility "
2. ENERGY REDUCTION
We have made significant improvements
to the energy efficiency of the lighting at
our facilities.
* 100% of the Henry Schein Dental Sales and Service
Centers have energy efficient fluorescent lighting
* The Corporate Facilities team replaced all the metal
halide parking lot light fixtures with technologically
advanced LED site lighting in Melville, NY
* Motion-activated light sensors, installed
throughout our offices, also significantly
drive down energy consumption
* More than 28% reduction in energy
consumption at U.S. distribution centers
3. REDUCTION IN WATER CONSUMPTION
Indoor Plumbing Fixture and Fitting Efficiency
* Installation of flush-o-meters and touchless faucets
leading to a 22% reduction in potable water usage
4. OPTIMIZING ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Multiple tasks were undertaken that led
to an Energy Star rating of 77 (defined
as the facilities operate 77% more
efficiently than similar buildings across the U.S.).
Such tasks included:
* Installation of a Building Automated System (BAS)

to assist in efficient building operations and
maintenance procedures
* Installation of air-cooled rooftop chillers
* Replaced multiple oil fuel boilers with condenser
duel-fuel boilers
* Replaced air handlers with high efficiency motors and
variable frequency drives that operate at high efficiency
* Automatic lighting controls/motion activated controls
installed throughout the facility
* LED lighting throughout the facility (including
the parking areas)
* Melville West Building has a " cool roof "
membrane made of single-ply, tri-polymer alloy
with reflective characteristics reducing
HVAC requirements
5. INDOOR AIR QUALITY/GREENHOUSE EMISSIONS
Multiple tasks were undertaken that led to recognizing
the facilities as Best in Management Practices with
regard to air quality performance and reducing
greenhouse emissions. Such tasks included:
* Installation of the air handling equipment/roof
top installation noted previously
* Installation of box air filters throughout the
facility with a MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting
Value) of 13, which is a superior rating for
commercial buildings
* Elimination of CFC refrigerants
in base building equipment
