Recent research from The Journal of the American Medical Association Internal
Medicine has found that between 2008 and 2015, there was a substantial shift in the
care setting that Americans accessed for low-acuity conditions. The number of people
treated at urgent care centers more than doubled in this period, while visits to
primary care offices and emergency rooms for non-life threatening conditions declined.i
This is quite an accomplishment for the urgent care segment, which sought to disrupt
health care delivery by providing patients with convenience through expanded
hours and seven-day-a-week availability.
