technician and laboratory owner, I pride
myself with being a part of the ever
changing dental laboratory industry.
Technological
changes
occur
daily
in our field and keeping up with the
advancements proves to be difficult at
times for smaller labs. Our 6 person lab
began our digital journey almost 10 years
ago. During that time, we have produced
thousands of successful removable cast
partials and crown and bridge work using
all digital technology; starting with design

Our most recent endeavor was a
partnership with Keystone Industries
which introduced the KeyPrint 3D
printable resins. By using these resins,
we design both fixed and removable
restorations digitally and are able to cast
in a reduced amount of time. One of the
greatest advantages to this resin system
is the ability to use the same investment
for both cast partials and cast crowns. By
adjusting the special liquid formulation,
chrome cobalt, gold and silver alloys are
produced with consistent accuracy and
quality.
Our process is quite traditional, from a
digital point of view. Once the intraoral
scan file is received in our lab, our
skilled technicians digitally design the
case. If a case is received with a
traditional impression or model, our
technician will scan the case using our
systems and begin the design at that
point. Our typical partial design is
finished within 20 minutes and crowns in
10. After the design is approved

and saved, it is brought into our Omega
3D nesting software and released to the
Ackurreta Diplo printer. Here is where the
time savings really takes shape. We nest
and print up to 12 partial frames that
take less than 40 minutes (on average)
to complete. The post cleaning process
in isopropyl alcohol is approximately 4
minutes and post light curing takes 4
minutes also. From that point we cut
off the supports and check the fit on the
3D printed model produced from the
digital impression scan or the original
stone model sent by the dental client.
Spruing and investing follows which
takes only a few more minutes.
By utilizing the advanced technology
available, we produce high quality products
with consistent results, every time. Can
you imagine? A four hour process yielding
a finished product that used to take a full
