USITT RECOMMENDED SYMBOLS STANDARDS FOR LIGHTING EQUIPMENT FRED M. WOLFF COMMISSIONER ON THEATRE ENGINEERING These recommendations specify symbols and abbreviations for lighting equipment and adjacent wiring devices used in theatrical and television layouts. They conform in general with those of the "I nternational Committee on Illumination" (CI El. and have been approved by the Commission of Theatre Engineering. The following symbols represent lighting units or luminaires. They should be used in such dimensions as to be in scale with the equipment and drawings on which they appear (Fi~ure 1). Other symbols represent wiring devices commonly used in theatrical and television drawings. As with the luminaires, they appear (Figure 2). These lighting sumbols shall be further identified with specifications by letter and numeral types. As modern practice calls for grounded equipment, all of these shall be so considered. If ungrounded equipment is required it shall be so indicated in notes and specifications. The device symbols shall be further identified with specifications by letter and numeral types. This identification shall include the letters SE (Stage Electrical) followed by a specific numeral, i.e. SE 1, SE 2, etc. Complete descriptions shall be included in the written specifications. Numeral plus letter identifications shall be located within or adjacent to an electrical item to indicate the DECEMBER. 1973 27
