Although prospective graduate school applicants and their advisors may differ in their perceptions of which programs constitute a viable choice for graduate study, one point of agreement has been the
dearth of a unified reference source which meaningfully sketches the
body of graduate programs across the country. Thanks to the efforts
of the Education Commission of the USITT, the responding graduate
departments, and editor Robert Lewis Smith, the Directory of Graduate Programs in Theatre Design and Technology now provides a
source which had been previously notable only in its absence.
The organization of the directory is standard, based on an alphabetically ordered list of states and their responding institutions. The
format for each entry is a detailed outline/questionnaire which limits
the respondents to tersely objective profiles of the admission and degree requirements, financial aid, academic and production programs,
equipment, and facilities. Subjective input from the schools is solicited in the area of program "philosophy," which, surprisingly or not,
some 40% of the respondents chose not to reveal.
The strength of this volume is in its objective stance. Dealing with
the responding programs in a clinical manner immediately clears
away the abundance of non-descriptive rhetoric which clouds most directories and catalogs. Inasmuch as all of the entries are only as accurate as they were prepared by the programs that returned them, interpretive readings are only as easy as the amount of qualitative
information rendered. As such, it is hard to judge how qualified many
undergraduates may be to fully assess the programs listed here. It is
fully expected, however, that a seasoned academic advisor, sensitive
to the individual student's needs would find this directory a distinct
advantage.
It would not be unreasonable to expect the addition of this volume
to every graduate and undergraduate Theatre Arts department as a
standard reference text.
