Ballet and opera were up significantly to 34% and 35% from 25% in 1980. Attendance at professional nonprofit theatre rose from one million in 1965 to 13 million in 1984 according to EA figures. The economy is strong. Inflation is under four percent. Leisure time is increasing. An adult, educated population with leisure time and money to spend-I'd call that an entertainment market. But the impact of the VCR on our market is unclear at this time. It is expected that 9.5 million units will be sold this year -almost 20% of American households will own a VCR by the end of 1985. There were 304 million tape rentals in 1984 and that business will go over one billion dollars this year. Will people go out for entertainment or bring it home? It is clear that the networks and film theatres will be affected. What about live theatre, ballet, and opera? Something very basic is changing in the entertainment industry and we are not immune. But it's just too soon to predict the impact. Finally, your audience is changing. The generation who grew up on radio and black and white television is being replaced. Ed Sullivan went to color in 1968 and the transition was complete in a short time. The theatres are now filled with people who have been subjected to a constant bombardment by visual images. The generation of the discos and rock concert , MTV and Solid Gold is coming. Their visual language involves quickly-changing images, varying tyles and vivid colors. Are we ready technically to present a level of production that will motivate this population to leave the VCR and come to the theat re? It will take development ... the SOrt of development we've seen since 1960. The development that result from a true partnership between the technicians and the manufacturers. 25 years and we're just at the beginning.... 0 B 8 8 B 8 8888B 8 8 LENS~ FOCUSING KNOB I----YOKE (Q)[L(Q)(@W PETER GEORGE ASSOCIATES INC.
