The totally renovated space was originally a movie theatre. The Joyce's 67 foot wide by 36 foot deep stage features a sprung, basket-weave floor with removable linoleum covering. A steeply dished seating rake and side-wall box seats create a gracious, intimate space with extraordinarily good sight lines for dance. Box office personnel can truly tell potential patrons that there is not a bad seat in the house. Hanging steel and a small battery of winches meet the relatively modest rigging needs of dance. A permanent lighting system is accommodated by on stage winched pipes and front-of-house catwalks. The theatre has two Light Palettes, one for running shows and one for editing disks. The Joyce has quickly become the choice of performers and audiences alike in New York's thriving dance community.
