The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) operates a year-round production program at Stratford-upon-Avon. When the original Festival Theatre burned in 1926, a design competition was conducted to replace i( the Royal Shakespeare Theatre was built adjacent to the burned-out structure and opened in 1932. The original structure was used as a rehearsal hall and storage facility, although the winning design had included plans to turn it into a replica of an Elizabethan theatre.
