he articles in this issue touch on topics of interest to many different
professions: education, scenic design, costume design, theatre architecture, production management, touring logistics, and leadership.
Barry and Annie Cleveland tell us about helping their students develop digital portfolios. They also describe some of the steps their department at Colorado State University took to integrate these digital student
evaluation tools into their instructional programs. Ron Naversen revisits a
lovely museum in Southern California, the Joseph J. Musil Salon of Theatres, that some of us enjoyed during one of our three recent Long Beach conferences. Travis DeCastro tells the background story of how Penn State's School of Theatre, with the help of the university's president,
negotiated a win-win deal with a local developer to build for them a new theatre. One of the unusual features of the space is its location: off-campus in a downtown area that needed some increased traffic, especially after normal business hours. Longtime TD&T contributing editor, Arnold
Wengrow, has a special fondness for British designers. I wasn't surprised, then, to learn that Arnold
was special curator of an exhibition on Michael Annals at the Theatre Museum in London. His article in this issue is adapted from his essay in the exhibit catalog. Dr. Mary C. Henderson, a historian with considerable expertise in New York theatre architecture, recognized the importance of
Manhattan Theatre Club's decision to rehabilitate the delapidated Biltmore Theatre into its new
Broadway home. Her story about this unusual theatre is about its history and its future. David Conte
and Christopher Smith know something about moving scenery-they work for Clark Transfer, a
leading theatrical transportation specialist. Their article describes today's tractor-trailers, offers
advice on putting them to best use, and advises those planning tours about some of the logistics involved in taking the show on the road. Sarah Nash Gates, USITT's first female president, delivered
the 2004 Fellows Address. In it, she shares some rules of thumb for successfully achieving one's
goals without driving yourself and your colleagues crazy. Rounding out this issue is an article by
Elynmarie Kazle giving well-deserved kudos to the winners of this year's USITT Young Designers &
Technicians Awards. -dr
