Wing Change (figs. 7 and 8) Like several other surviving Baroque theatres, the scenic wings at Cˇ esk y´ Krumlov are set upon metal hooks mounted on the wing trolleys or wing frames and are fastened to the trolleys with hooks and eyes. Each wing trolley consists of a lower section with wheels running in tracks under the stage and an upper section extending above the stage. The sections are joined together with a metal plate that passes through a slot in the stage floor.4 This metal plate allows the slots in the stage floor to be much narrower than in most mechanized Baroque theatres in which the entire wing trolley passes through the slot in the stage floor (see Mohler 1999, 47-56). The first three sets of wings contain three wing trolleys and the last two sets contain four wing trolleys. Since there are three or more trolleys in each set, hooks are located on the onstage and offstage sides to allow the ropes from the central axle to be attached to the proper trolley and the offstage sides of the trolleys to be connected by use of a pulley. Although the rigging is simpler in theatres with only two wing trolleys in each set since the ropes do not have to be re-connected to different trolleys, the use of additional trolleys allows more scenes to be preset. Cˇ esk y´ Krumlov has two central axles, one to operate the first four sets of wings and a smaller one to operate the upstage-most set of wings.5 Each axle is turned by using integral winch handles.6 Two stagehands operate the large central axle and, when it is needed, a third stagehand operates the smaller upstage axle. The same stagehands re-hook the ropes to the trolleys and are assisted by the footlight operator. Border Change 7 (figs. 9 and 10) The border axles are located on the upper and lower galleries; the axles on the lower gallery have integral winch handles and the axles on the upper galleries have drums. The lower gallery contains two border axles, one axle for the downstage borders and the other for the upstage borders. Ropes from these axles lead to a set of brailed borders. Pulleys are not used for the Figure 4. Theatre Levels THEATRE SPRING 2007 DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY 57
