The STAGe
The Thurber Theatre on the campus of The Ohio State University is a partially trapped proscenium stage. Each trap module
has a deck size of 4´-0˝ x 8´-0˝. The traps are supported from
below by a 3˝ concrete ledge around the entire perimeter,
resulting in an effective opening of 3´-6˝ x 7´-6˝.

In approaching our task from a modular point of view, we
decided to create "end gates" that would insert in the traps
(fig. 2). The end gates run across the short side of the trap
opening, and can be joined by variable-length cross bars,
depending on the size of the needed "car." The end gates
are self-contained and provide structure, sheave location,
and a stable guidance system for the lift car. Only the top
and bottom members are welded; all other assembly joints
are through-bolted, providing flexibility and creating stock
components for future lift demands.
The basic structure of each gate is a welded frame
of 2˝ x 2˝ 14-gauge tube steel with a top horizontal that
extends beyond the vertical legs and rests on the concrete
ledge. The bottom horizontal has bolt-down, adjustable
feet for leveling, stability, and anchoring purposes to
compensate for our uneven trap room floor. (McMasterCarr part #60945K31) The vertical members of the gate
provide structure as well as serving as the guide surface
for eight wheels attached at opposing directions on the lift
car corners.
At the bottom of the winch end gate, an assembly
consisting of a 1˝ diameter shaft running through pillow
blocks, and two 5˝ dia. sheaves guide the lifting cables from
the in-stock winch system up to the car (fig. 3). Each end
of the lift car then has sheaves to redirect the cables left
and right, then back down under the car, across the length
of the car, over to upper sheaves on the opposing gate and
then are dead-tied using a moused turnbuckle for ease
of tension adjustment. The cable, running through these
various sheaves, becomes the lifting force for the car.
As mentioned before, the guidance system for the car
consisted of twelve roller guide wheels, two on the inside
of each vertical (left and right) and one on the other (front
and back) to oppose each other in force. This system
enabled the car to roll smoothly, up and down the gate leg,
but did not provide enough stability to prevent "racking"
over the full length of the car.
