This issue of TD&T really demonstrates how this journal
fulfills USITT's mission to "ensure a vibrant dialogue
among practitioners, educators, and students." It has
something for the most skilled professionals, for the
students and educators who really care about learning
best practices, for facility managers, for designers, and for
technicians.
Owen Collins opened my eyes to an affordable way to play with a very nifty, and normally very
expensive technology: rapid prototyping or 3D printing. I had heard about medical research labs
3D-printing human organs and bones, but never dreamed that it was possible to set one of these
machines up on your desk.
Dan Gray brings us another gee-wiz story. It's about a complete theatre, built in England by
the Royal Shakespeare Company, and then shipped across the Atlantic to New York City where the
pieces were assembled into a beautiful, free-standing Elizabethan theatre inside the cavernous
Park Avenue Armory.
Karen Brewster gets some professional advice from wig-master Ryan Fischer and organizes it
into an easy-to-understand tutorial. In three well-illustrated steps, she describes how to prepare a
secure base for the wig with pin curls and sports adhesive bandages, how to properly apply the wig
to the actor's head, and how to glue down the front edge of a lace-front wig.
Barry Cleveland, a frequent contributor to TD&T and also co-author of USITT's latest monograph, The Designs of Carrie Robbins, provides a detailed account of how a multi-million-dollar
performing arts center on his campus was conceived and built through the close involvement of
the facility's end-users and by the diligent use of low-cost materials.
Raymond Kent won several awards for his audio-visual, lighting, and show control designs
for the renovations of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, OH. His article
focuses on how technology enables sensory-rich story telling.
Finally, Delbert Hall breaks down the math you'll absolutely need to know if you are responsible for hanging three-point bridles. What are those, you ask? Well, maybe you don't need to study
the formulas in this article too closely. But, I think you might be a bit more impressed the next
time you are at a rock concert or a trade show and see lots of trusses suspended in precise locations, all hanging from three-point bridles.
