This issue's articles all expand upon ongoing discussions in the field, reaching back to Shakespeare and forward
to some of our newest technologies. Each analyzes how we
move forward as a discipline while building upon our foundations.
Through a discussion of a touring exhibit, Barbora
Příhodová analyzes the ways in which Czech theatre companies have used Shakespeare to explore political and social
issues throughout the 20th century. The exhibit, Shakespeare
in Prague: Imagining the Bard in the Heart of Europe, explores
the shifting cultural landscapes that influenced textual reinterpretations of Shakespeare's texts.
Paul Brunner and Olivia Ranseen share the results of their grant-funded case study
on introducing sustainable practices throughout an entire production. Their waste audit
and ensuing case study provide a model for how we can analyze and adjust our existing
practices and construction techniques to incorporate newer materials and approaches
to reduce waste. The study uncovered four major obstacles to increasing sustainable
practice on campuses, and the authors offer solutions to those impediments.
Owen Collins breaks down the potential health hazards of 3D printing in his
article. In addition to providing a useful analysis of the shortcomings of our current
knowledge about this newer technology, he offers critical advice on how to use our
existing health and safety infrastructures and traditions to be safer users of 3D printers.
Pencil and paper design class pedagogy meets computerized technology in Frank
Brault's assessment of how we might better incorporate the two in our classrooms. He
argues that by incorporating the pedagogical trend of flipped classrooms into design
classes, we can better integrate design pedagogy with technological skill acquisition.
And finally, we include the best of the best from Tech Expo in our coverage of the
16th biennial event. Each of the five solutions in this section re-envision our standard
practices to devise new approaches to technical challenges. Unconventional materials are used to create more flexible armor, newer materials lead to sturdier puppets,
and natural dyes provide alternatives to more toxic coloration methods. Improvements
upon wagon brakes provide additional stability, and finally, newer technology leads to
solutions for budget-conscious automation. We invite our readers to explore these new
