Life on the Road
For the technicians who travel with the
show, a day in the life typically involves
working with and supervising the local
crew in the load-in and load-out of
equipment, setting up and operating
sound, lighting, and other technical
equipment, training and managing the
activities of local stagehands and technicians,
troubleshooting
technical
issues, and ultimately ensuring that all
aspects of the production run smoothly
during performances. Touring technicians
often have the opportunity to work
in diverse theatrical environments and
interact with a wide range of industry
professionals, gaining valuable handson
experience.

provides invaluable exposure
Early Career Lessons
When starting your touring career, you may very well be
working one-nighters. You will usually live on a tour bus and
play a different city and venue each night. The rhythm: load in,
do the show, load out, take a shower, get on the bus, wake up
in the next city, and then do it all again. " Split weeks " represent
a step up where you may spend 3 days in each city before
moving to the next one, while one-weekers sit in a town
for usually a week. Some tours will combine all three types of
schedule. You may do a series of one-nighters and then spend
a week in a bigger market. It can be a very challenging lifestyle,
but also very rewarding.
Someone once told me when I started my touring career
that if you have the basic skills, the most important thing to
be able to do is to get along with people. Having experience
and knowledge is good as well, but really, getting along with
people, both the touring company and the locals, is very important.
Problem-solving
in the action is a key skill. If a set piece
or light is damaged, how do we repair/replace or get around
to the inner workings of the entertainment
industry. It offers a comprehensive
understanding of production logistics,
technical requirements, and the collaborative
nature of live performances.
Many find this experience an excellent
foundation for pursuing a broader career
in backstage theatre production,
including stage management, technical
direction, or production coordination.
The combination of practical skills,
industry knowledge, and networking
opportunities makes the role of a touring
theatre technician an ideal starting
point for a successful career.
While the life of a touring technician
does offer the excitement of travel
and the opportunity to see different cities,
the job is demanding. Entry-level
technicians often start with tours that
might only be in a city for a single day.
This means that within 24 hours, the
technician needs to set up the show,
perform, pack everything back into
the trucks, and start all over again in a
completely new city a few hours later
after a quick sleep on a bus. The work
hours are long, the stress level can be
high, and the job requires a high level of
adaptability and resilience.
The touring environment also
teaches important lessons about perspectives
and priorities. Among those
lessons, not easy to master in the world
of " The Show Must Go On, " is the
it? How do we fit into this venue? Each venue can have unique
architectural challenges: posts, beams, stuff attached to
walls, limitations of power, limitations of a particular fly rail
or grid, dock configurations, circuits that don't work, fixtures
that don't work, and more. Sometimes we know about these
challenges in advance and sometimes we don't. I have been
to some venues where the loading doors are shorter or narrower
than the doors of a truck and we have had to literally
cut pieces off of the scenery, or grind bumpers off the loading
doors, to get the show in. In another there was a sharp turn
and the 20' set cart couldn't make the turn. And, sometimes
you may have to use forklifts to get the two halves of " Pride
Rock " (2,000 and 3,000 pounds, respectively) 15 feet up to
a scaffold dock extension to get it into the building. You may
have 1,500 audience members waiting for the show to start,
so you had better have done all your prep and be able to solve
problems very quickly.
