Truck Tonnage
Suffers Decline
American Trucking Associations'
advanced seasonally adjusted ForHire Truck Tonnage Index declined
2.8 percent in October - its first drop
since July - but ATA's chief economist
remains confident.
The index slipped to 124 in October,
its lowest level since April, down from a
revised 127.5 for September, according
to an Oct. 22 ATA report. The numbers
compare to a 2000 baseline figure of
100.
Nonetheless, compared with
October 2012, this year's October index

figure was up 8 percent, the largest
year-over-year gain since December
2011.
"It isn't surprising for
volumes to fall back some
after such a good run."
- Bob Costello, chief economist,
American Trucking Associations
"From May through September, the
index surged 3.5 percent, including
only one monthly decrease over that
period," said ATA's chief economist, Bob
Costello. "It isn't surprising for volumes
to fall back some after such a good
run.
"Despite October's month-tomonth decrease, we saw a very robust
year-over-year increase, and I'm
seeing some good signs out of the
trucking industry that suggest the
economy may be a little stronger than
we think," he said. "Specifically, the
heavy freight sectors, like tank truck,
have been helping tonnage this year.
But, in the third quarter, generic dry
van truckload freight saw the best
quarterly gains since 2010. I view this
positively for the economy. I view it
positively for trucking. Now, we have
to see if it continues."
Intermodal Rail
Hits Record Again
The "tremendous value" of intermodal is continuing to spur record
intermodal rail volumes, according to
a senior executive of the Association of
American Railroads.
According to AAR's Dec. 6 Rail Time
Indicators report, U.S. railroads originated 1,007,549 intermodal containers and trailers in November, up 7.8
percent from November 2012.
The November 2013 weekly average of 251,887 intermodal units was
the highest weekly average for any
November in history, according to the
report.
With November's monthly gain,
U.S. intermodal rail traffic volume has
now risen on a year-over-year basis for
48 straight months.
