In a final rule published April 3, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration termed as "inflation adjustments" the increases to 39 of the 67 civil penalties enforceable by the agency. For example, the penalty for financial responsibility infractions and some out-of-service order violations is being raised to $21,000 from $16,000. Some other hikes are as little as $100. Scott Darling III no longer has the word "acting" in his administrator title at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. According to a March 23 statement, U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has removed "acting" from the title and delegated "the responsibility for performing the duties of FMCSA admin- istrator" to Darling, who assumed the acting role in August, following Anne Ferro's departure. President Barack Obama has yet to announce a permanent appointee. Canada Supports ELDs for Trucks Canada's minister of transport, Lisa Raitt, has come out in support of two truck and bus safety technologies - electronic logging devices and electronic stability control systems. She made the announcement March 19, following a roundtable meeting with Canadian Trucking Alliance officials. "This is consistent with the Government of Canada's commitment to align with U.S. vehicle standards," according to the statement. "Transport Canada is also working with provinces and territories to develop the business case for introducing ELDs across Canada to be well positioned once the standards are finalized." June 5 Deadline for TIGER Applications The U.S. Department of Transportation has set a June 5 deadline for receipt of online applications for fiscal year 2015 Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grants. Applicants must also have met a May 4 deadline for pre-application submission, according to an April 2 notice of funding availability. A total of $500 million has been appropriated for surface transportation infrastructure projects in this, the seventh round of TIGER grants. Also on the federal grants front, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is accepting applications through May 19 for shares of $100 million in fiscal 2015 port security grants.
