panies work to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency. Among the 22 partners recognized are CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk Line, MOL, NYK Line, UPS and Walmart. CN will plant 100,000 trees in the spring in recognition of its customers' commitment to sustainable business practices. The company has also announced that 31 communities in Canada were selected amongst the 92 applications to receive grants of up to $25,000 through the CN EcoConnexions - From the Ground Up program, now in its fifth year. The program's objective is to promote community sustainability through the greening of municipal and community properties across Canada. Its program partners are Tree Canada and Communities in Bloom. Maryland Governor Signs Emissions Bill Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan signed a diesel emissions bill April 5 aimed at reducing greenhouse-gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030 compared with the state's GHG output in 2006. Maryland already ranks above the national average in share of clean diesel commercial vehicles in operation with 128,000, or 28.6 percent, for model year 2010 and newer diesel commercial vehicles. The national average is 25.7 percent. Port News Army Corps Begins Houston Channel Survey The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it will begin surveying the 52-mile Houston Ship Channel for its next round of dredging. The ship channel falls under federal management and is authorized for dredging to 45 feet. It is as shallow as 36 feet at some points, according to the Galveston District of the Army Corps. The study to examine dredging to at least 45 feet is expected to cost $10 million and take four years. To keep channel dredging on track, the Port of Houston Authority will share the cost with the federal government and will fund an $80 million dredging project at its container terminals. In other news, Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co. have joined forces to operate a new direct all-water container service between the U.S. Gulf and Asia, with Houston as one of its calls. The new service by the 2M Alliance features the "Lone Star Express" by MSC and "TP18" by Maersk. The first sailing was scheduled to depart Asia May 2, with Houston as the first U.S. inbound port call. The vessels deployed will have a capacity of about 4,500 TEUs. Oakland Introduces Smart Phone Apps The Port of Oakland has introduced two smart phone applications to calculate truck turn times for containerized cargo handling. DrayQ and DrayLink employ Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS technology to tell drivers how long they will wait to enter marine terminal gates and how long their transactions will take. The apps also give shippers a view of the location and productivity of the drivers they hire. The port said it commissioned the apps to meet demand for accurate measurement of turn times. According to the Port of Oakland, drivers and beneficial cargo owners who receive up-to-the minute information on turn times can plan transactions around peak periods of marine terminal activity. The port can get uncontestable data on how quickly terminals are moving containers for cargo owners.
