Business Meeting Roundtables Advance Safety and Productivity IANA's May Operations and Maintenance Business Meeting in Lombard, Illinois. continued to advance a number of safety and productivity issues. The meeting featured task force-driven roundtable discussions which employed a live, interactive polling tool to get feedback from participants. The result was a strong sense of movement and collaboration. "There's a lot of membership engagement and a lot of work going on," said Stephen Keppler, senior vice president of IANA, as he opened the meeting which took place May 3-5. Not only were the efforts of the various task forces and roundtables apparent, the collaboration among stakeholders and between the task forces themselves is helping to drive results. General session speaker Darrell Ruban, field administrator for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, commented, "I want to applaud what you all are doing, what IANA is doing, you guys are tackling some of the difficult issues, you're talking about the challenges." INTERMODAL FREIGHTCAST - Supply, Demand and Future Prospects Monday, Sept. 19, will start with the EXPO's annual review of intermodal's recent performance, prospects and trends. Specific issues that will be covered include energy prices, rail service gains, liner challenges and truckload competition. CSX Intermodal Terminals, and Gerry Bisaillon, general director of premium operations for Union Pacific, showcased results of the Standard Industry Safety Rules and Procedures at Intermodal Facilities Task Force in the initial session, "Drayage Safety at Intermodal Terminals." Taking the data the task force compiled on intermodal operations, they reported over 25 million gate transactions in 2015 with monthly mishaps ranging from a low of about 55 in December to just over 100 in August. The task force looked across the stakeholders, reporting on terminal employees, draymen and vendors, finding that the most frequent mishaps were collisions. This was followed by process errors. Those two categories taken together totaled over 80 percent of issues across all three groups. Armed with this and other data, the task force developed six recommended practices which were discussed in the session, in roundtable sessions and in committee meetings.
