PORT NEWS - from page 17 The peak-season program of flex and late gates was set to begin Aug. 22 at The Northwest Seaport Alliance of Seattle and Tacoma and last up to 12 weeks. Also on the West Coast, the Oakland International Container Terminal this year committed to expanded night operations this summer, paid for by a flat fee of $30 on containers whether they move in peak or off-peak hours. Panama Canal Draft Raised to 44 Feet The Panama Canal Authority has raised the maximum allowable draft on the canal's new locks to 44 feet - one foot deeper than the maximum in place since the new locks opened in June. The increase is based on increased water levels on the Gatun Lake reservoir that feeds the lake and forecasts of more rain in the watershed. Though designed for a draft up to 50 feet, the locks were limited by dry weather which reduced source water levels at Gatun Lake. In the first month of operation, the new locks handled 69 neo-Panamax vessels - 40 of which were container ships. Kia Motors Picks Savannah Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia will ship auto parts via rail from the Port of Savannah to inland terminal Cordele Intermodal Services, and from there to Kia's manufacturing plant in West Point, Ga., by motor carrier. Cordele will handle up to 30,000 TEUs per year to supply the plant under the new agreement. According to Georgia officials, the partnership will save more than 6 million truck miles per year, reduce congestion on Georgia highways, and lower transportation costs. Cordele recently was designated an official container yard by shipping lines Maersk, NYK, CMA-CGM, MSC and ZIM. TOTE and INTERSHIP Link Up in Puerto Rico TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico and INTERSHIP announced a joint venture that forms one of the largest terminal operating companies serving Puerto Rico. The joint venture, Puerto Rico Terminals, combines two of the island's largest maritime operations and $38 million worth of existing assets at the Puerto Nuevo terminals near San Juan. It will move over 250,000 containers and autos annually in and out of Puerto Rico. The partners say PRT customers will see improved vessel turn times, enhanced safety and security features and other technology-based service upgrades. The adjacent properties operated by TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico and INTERSHIP at the Puerto Nuevo terminals east of San Juan cover 122 acres and include eight newly renovated cranes, eight inbound/outbound lanes and RORO/LOLO cargo handling. Direct Keep it simple. Long Beach is the fastest, most direct way to move goods between the Far East and most of the U.S. That's all you need to remember: Port of Long Beach. polb.com/trade www.POLB.com September 2016 | Intermodal Insights 19 http://www.polb.com/trade http://www.POLB.com
