I
ntermodal rail service was enhanced on multiple fronts this year, top industry
executives told Intermodal Insights.
The upgrades spanned a variety of activities. Terminal
capacity was improved, operational efficiencies were created,
customer service capabilities were enhanced, new facilities were
opened and additional partnerships were established throughout
North America.
"There are three things we can add to our facilities to increase
their capacity, and we are engaged in all three at hubs across
our network," said Tom Williams, vice president of consumer
products at BNSF Railway, citing more track, cranes and parking.
BNSF investments have totaled $1.2 billion at intermodal hubs
since 2002.
For example, 17 miles of track were added at the Logistics
Park Chicago Intermodal Facility. In addition, Automated Gate
Systems were added this year in the Phoenix, Houston and
Minneapolis areas. As a result, more than 85 percent of BNSF's
intermodal freight will travel through an automated gate, he said,
reducing truck idling time and emissions to move trucks through

entrance gates in as little as 30
seconds.
The railroad also has added a
24-hour in advance estimated time of
arrival notification for trains.

"With that information in hand, we
can empower retailers with the ability
to make inventory decisions that are
in sync with the speed and efficiency

Norfolk Southern has worked a two-pronged approach to
enhance services and customers' experience, said Jeff Heller,
vice president of intermodal at the railroad.
"We are developing new domestic services to provide
